Text Box: Spring Clean Your Body: A New Look at Dieting
Text Box: I must confess, I’ve never been much concerned with nutrition or exercise. At 4’10”, under 90 lbs, and blessed with a high metabolism, I’ve enjoyed a life eating pretty much what I wanted, even surviving many years on a diet of cokes, snickers and fast food!
But about eight months ago, that changed. Even though I was eating much better and even exercising some, my jeans were getting tighter and most of my clothes were becoming very uncomfortable. Every week there seemed to be more and more “poochieness” around my body.
When my doctors shrugged their shoulders and my sister laughed at me - (I used to eat handfuls of Nestles Chocolate Chip cookies for a bedtime snack while she and mom looked on in envy, so I guess it serves me right! :) - I decided to go searching for answers on my own. After all, at this continuous rate of pooch growth, I was sure to be 200 lbs before Christmas!
Enjoy the rest of the issue!
Text Box: In my search for clues on how to “manage” the extra fat cells collecting on my body, I discovered some very interesting things.
Despite the $50 billion spent on weight loss in this country every year, obesity rates have tripled since 1960, and has now overtaken smoking as the leading cause of preventable deaths. This accounts for the increasing rates of heart disease, stroke, cancer, dementia, and diabetes.
The good news is there’s a new science called nutrigenomics—the science of how food talks to our genes. It was developed over the past 10 years by Dr. Mark Hyman while working with thousands of patients as co-medical director at Canyon Ranch and in his private practice. In his research, he discovered the fundamental causes of obesity which he explains in his book, Ultra-Metabolism.
There are seven common beliefs, or “myths” as he calls them, that actually sabotage our efforts to loose weight. One of these is the “Starvation Myth: Eat less + exercise more = weight loss.” We evolved as humans when there was a scarcity of food. If we try to live on less calories than our body needs to function properly, the body thinks it’s in danger of starvation and sends a cascade of molecules to the blood stream that send hunger signals too strong to ignore. That’s why diets don’t work. Our bodies are designed to gain weight. It’s a basic survival behavior controlled by the limbic brain—the oldest and most primitive part of the brain.
Even if you stayed in bed and didn’t expend any energy at all, the average person needs about 10 times their weight in pounds to provide enough energy (calories) for the body to run its metabolism for the day. If you eat less than that amount, the body instantly perceives danger, turns on its molecular alarm system, and slows your metabolism.
The real key, Dr. Hyman explains, is to learn how to tune up your metabolism and use your body’s natural calorie-burning capabilities to help you lose weight and get healthy.
